Quick answers to the most common questions about emergency dental care – what counts as an emergency, what to do next, and how we can help you get out of pain.

    1. What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is usually a problem that needs urgent attention, such as severe toothache, swelling, bleeding, dental trauma, or a broken tooth causing pain. If you’re unsure, it’s still worth contacting us for guidance.

    2. Should I contact a dentist or go to A&E?

Most tooth and gum problems are best handled by a dentist. If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or rapidly increasing facial swelling, seek urgent medical help straight away.

    3. What should I do if I have severe toothache?

Contact us as soon as you can so we can assess the cause and advise next steps. Until you’re seen, keep the area clean, avoid chewing on the painful side, and use pain relief only as directed on the label if it’s suitable for you.

    4. What should I do if my face is swollen?

Swelling can be a sign of infection and should be assessed promptly. Contact us for urgent advice, and seek immediate medical help if swelling is affecting breathing, swallowing, or is rapidly getting worse.

    5. What happens at an emergency dental appointment?

We’ll focus on diagnosing the cause of your symptoms and stabilising the problem. You’ll be told what’s happening, what can be done today, and what follow-up treatment may be needed.

    6. Can you help if a filling or crown has come off?

Yes. If a restoration comes loose or falls out, it can leave the tooth sensitive or vulnerable. Contact us so we can assess the tooth and advise whether it can be re-cemented or needs an alternative solution.

    7. What should I do if I chip or break a tooth?

If there’s pain, sharp edges, or the tooth has fractured significantly, it should be assessed quickly. Keep any fragments you can, avoid chewing on that side, and contact us so we can advise the best next step.

    8. What should I do if I knock a tooth out?

This can be time-sensitive. If possible, keep the tooth safe and handle it carefully, ideally by the crown rather than the root. Contact us urgently for advice – and if you can’t reach a dentist quickly, seek urgent care.

    9. Can I get antibiotics for a dental infection?

Antibiotics aren’t always the right solution for dental infections, because the underlying cause often needs dental treatment. If medication is appropriate, your clinician will advise – the aim is to treat the problem, not just the symptoms.

    10. What can I do at home to manage pain until I’m seen?

Try to keep the area clean, avoid very hot or cold foods if you’re sensitive, and avoid chewing on the affected side. Use pain relief only as directed on the label if it’s suitable for you, and contact us as soon as possible for assessment.

    Emergency Dentistry FAQs

Is An Emergency Dentist Visit Covered By Dental Insurance?
If you have dental insurance, then your treatment for emergency dentistry is highly likely to be covered as part of your policy. With the nature of dental emergencies, you’re unlikely to check your insurance policy before making an appointment, but if you are looking to take out a new dental insurance policy, then you can always choose a policy which includes this. If your emergency dentistry treatment is covered by dental insurance, then you can pay for your treatment at the practice before claiming back your money.
What is Classed As A Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency involves anything that requires immediate attention or is causing severe pain or discomfort. If you have experienced trauma or injury, including sports injuries, are suffering from symptoms of an abscess or infection, have a broken tooth or denture or have had severe pain for a few days, then this would be classed as a dental emergency and we’d recommend a visit to our emergency dentist. With dental emergencies, time is of the essence so that we can take a good look at your problem and make the right treatment decision. This not only helps to alleviate pain and discomfort but also ensures that we can mitigate any further damage or complications.
How Much Is A Visit To An Emergency Dentist?
The cost for an appointment with our emergency dentists is £65. This includes a full assessment, diagnosis and treatment advice. If we find that additional treatment is recommended, then this will be carried out if required and your treatment plan will be charged as a separate cost if you decide to stay with us for your treatment. You don’t need to be a Beyond Dental patient to access our emergency dentist appointments - simply book a time and day that suits you.
What Is The Most Common Dental Emergency?
Dental emergencies really can vary from patient to patient, depending on their age and lifestyle. Older patients may be more susceptible to dental emergencies involving tooth loss or damage to dentures and dental implants, whereas younger patients may experience extreme pain due to wisdom teeth complications or sports trauma. We find that the most common dental emergency we see at our Beyond Dental practices involves toothache or signs of dental infection, which we can look at getting sorted out as soon as possible with the right treatment plan.
What Happens If I Need Additional Treatment?
If, during your emergency dentist appointment, we find that a certain treatment would be beneficial, then there are some options available. If you are a registered Beyond Dental patient, then we can continue with your treatment as soon as possible and you can just sit back and let us get to work. If you visit us and aren’t registered with us as a Beyond Dental patient, but would like to do so, then we can work with your current dentist, if you have one, to move your information over to us and work on getting your treatment sorted. By registering as a Beyond Dental patient, you will get 10% off the cost of your treatment, as well as twice yearly dental check ups and hygiene visits, plus FREE teeth whitening. You’re also welcome to simply just visit our emergency dentists for an emergency appointment for £65 and then have the recommended treatment at your usual dentist or join an alternative practice. During your emergency dentist consultation, we can discuss all of these options in more detail with you.
