The clue is in the name when it comes to dental bridgework. It quite literally bridges the gap between missing teeth by adding natural looking replacements that are fully functional. In fact, they will look so natural that nobody will even know you’ve had anything done. Dental bridgework is a cost effective and minimally invasive treatment that gives wonderfully natural results. It doesn’t get much better than that, right?
Top 10 Dental Bridge FAQs
Quick answers to the most common questions about dental bridges – what they are, when they’re recommended, and how to care for a bridge long term.
1. What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It fills the gap by attaching to neighbouring teeth or supporting restorations, helping restore function and appearance.
2. When might I need a bridge?
A bridge may be recommended if you’re missing a tooth and want a fixed option to restore chewing function and aesthetics. Your clinician will assess your teeth, gums and bite to confirm whether a bridge is suitable.
3. What are the alternatives to a dental bridge?
Alternatives can include dental implants, partial dentures, or leaving the gap untreated in some situations. The best option depends on your oral health, the position of the missing tooth, and your preferences – your clinician will help you compare choices.
4. What types of dental bridges are available?
There are different bridge designs and materials. The right option depends on factors such as how the bridge will be supported, the position in your mouth, and aesthetic goals. Your clinician will recommend the most appropriate choice for your case.
5. What happens during the bridge procedure?
The process typically involves assessing the area, preparing any supporting teeth if needed, and taking impressions or digital scans. A temporary restoration may be used while the final bridge is made, then the fit and bite are checked carefully before it’s secured.
6. Does getting a dental bridge hurt?
Treatment is usually carried out with local anaesthetic if tooth preparation is needed, to keep you comfortable. Some tenderness or sensitivity can occur afterwards, and your clinician will advise on what’s normal and how to manage it.
7. How long does it take to get a bridge?
Timing varies depending on the type of bridge and the steps required. Your clinician will explain the expected number of visits and what happens at each stage after your assessment.
8. How long do dental bridges last?
Longevity depends on factors such as the design, materials, bite forces and how well the bridge is cared for. Regular check-ups help monitor the bridge and the supporting teeth and gums over time.
9. How do I clean under and around a bridge?
Cleaning around a bridge is important to protect the supporting teeth and gums. Your clinician can recommend the most suitable tools, such as interdental brushes or floss aids, and show you how to clean effectively around the bridge.
10. Can a dental bridge look natural?
Yes. Bridges can be designed to blend with your natural teeth in shape and colour. Your clinician will discuss aesthetic goals and advise what’s realistic for the position of the bridge and your smile.

More About Dental Bridgework
Dental bridgework not only improves your smile cosmetically, but it can also bring back the functionality that may have been missing prior to treatment. Losing teeth can have an impact on every element of our lives, from drinking and eating to chatting and lack of confidence. If this is having an impact on you, dental bridgework can provide the perfect solution!
How Does the Treatment Work?
When you arrive at our relaxing practice, you will come in for an hour-long appointment. During this time, we will create a 5D scan of your teeth to send to our lab team who will craft the perfect dental bridge for you to fill the gap where teeth are missing. Next, we will prepare the teeth on either side and then fit a temporary bridge whilst we wait for your one-of-a-kind dental bridge to arrive.
A couple of weeks later, we will invite you back to have your temporary bridge removed and your permanent bridge fitted! This 30 minute appointment will give you results that last between 5 and 10 years. Et voila, your dental bridgework is complete!
Treatment Eligibility
It’s important to note that in order to qualify for dental bridgework, the teeth surrounding the gap need to be healthy. Otherwise, a dental implant may be required. Don’t worry though, all these options will be discussed in depth with one of our dentists during a dental consultation. We can cross that (dental) bridge when we come to it.
If you are unsure whether dental bridgework is right for you, book in for a consultation and a member of our team will be more than happy to talk you through the options!
