Top 10 Composite Veneers FAQs

Quick answers to the most common questions about composite veneers – what they are, who they suit, and how to keep results looking natural over time.

1. What are composite veneers?

Composite veneers are cosmetic restorations made using tooth-coloured resin to improve the appearance of teeth. The material is shaped to refine colour and contour, helping create a more even-looking smile.

2. What can composite veneers help improve?

They can help improve the look of uneven shapes, small gaps, minor chips, and some discolouration. Suitability depends on tooth structure and bite, so an assessment is important before choosing treatment.

3. How are composite veneers different from porcelain veneers?

Composite veneers use resin, while porcelain veneers are typically custom-made in a lab as ceramic restorations. Your clinician can explain the differences in finish, maintenance, and which option best suits your goals and teeth.

4. Are composite veneers the same as composite bonding?

They’re closely related. Composite veneers generally refer to broader cosmetic coverage of the front tooth surface using resin, while bonding can be smaller repairs or reshaping. Your clinician will explain what level of change is appropriate for your smile.

5. Does getting composite veneers damage teeth?

Composite treatments can often be conservative, depending on the case and your goals. Your clinician will explain any preparation needed, whether it’s minimal, and why it’s recommended for your teeth.

6. How long do composite veneers last?

Longevity varies depending on bite forces, habits, and how much composite is used. Regular check-ups help monitor the edges and finish, and maintenance or repairs can sometimes be needed over time.

7. Do composite veneers stain or chip?

Composite can pick up surface staining over time and may chip if it’s exposed to heavy forces or habits such as nail biting. Your clinician can advise on aftercare and how to protect your result day to day.

8. Can composite veneers look natural?

Yes – when shade and shape are planned carefully. Your clinician will guide choices around brightness, tooth length, and proportions so the result looks balanced and suits your features.

9. Can I whiten my teeth if I have composite veneers?

Whitening changes the shade of natural teeth but does not change composite colour in the same way. If whitening is part of your goal, your clinician can advise on timing and how to keep the final result consistent.

10. How much do composite veneers cost?

Costs vary depending on how many teeth are treated and the complexity of the work. After a consultation, your clinician can provide a tailored quote and explain what’s included in your plan.

Composite Veneers FAQs

What Do Composite Veneers Look Like?
Composite veneers are very thin, tooth-coloured covers that are made from resin. Unlike porcelain veneers, the resin used for composite veneers is applied and moulded directly onto your teeth. As porcelain is a naturally hard and shiny material, resin composite veneers may need slightly more prep work in order to make the material look just like your natural teeth.
How Are Composite Veneers Fitted?
The process for having composite veneers fitted is slightly different to porcelain veneers. Although the end results are fairly similar, the treatment can usually be carried out in a much shorter time frame, meaning you can leave with a new smile in just one appointment. Unlike porcelain veneers, composite veneers use a resin that is applied directly to the surface of the tooth. Then, this is shaped and moulded by your dentist to create the perfect shaped veneer.

During your appointment, we will help you select the shade you want your composite veneers to be and then you can lie back in our super comfortable chairs whilst we get to work handcrafting your new smile. Once both you and your dentist are happy with the look and feel of your composite veneers, a high-intensity light is used to harden the composite resin. Once set, your dentist will gently smooth and polish the surface of the resin to create a more natural tooth-like appearance. This is all done in one appointment, which means that you can leave your Beyond Dental clinic with a brand new smile in just an hour or two!
Do Composite Veneers Ruin Your Teeth?
In comparison to porcelain veneers, where permanent changes are made to your natural teeth, composite veneers require no long-lasting alterations or changes. This means that, if you are looking to solve cosmetic complaints without permanent changes, composite veneers are the best option. Composite veneers require very little preparation, so the material can be easily applied, removed, repaired and replaced if needed.
How Long Do Composite Veneers Last?
Compared to porcelain veneers, resin composite veneers may need replacing more frequently. This is due to the material that is used to create composite veneers, as it is less durable than porcelain, so composite veneers do tend to have a shorter lifespan of between 5 and 7 years.
How To Look After Composite Veneers
You shouldn’t need to follow any specialist care instructions after having composite veneers fitted. Following a proper oral care routine with regular brushing, flossing and use of mouthwash can ensure that your composite veneers remain in the best condition. Composite veneers tend to be more porous than porcelain, which makes the material more susceptible to staining. Maintaining regular check ups with your Beyond Dental dentist means that we can keep an eye on how your composite veneers are aging, and you can then voice any concerns you may have.
